Today is eight years since my wife and I were married. When I think about our relationship and the life we have created together I think of everlasting love.
A few weeks ago my oldest daughter (she’s five) asked me if we were best friends. I said “yes”.
“What about after we die? We will still be best friends?” she continued.
“We’ll be best friends for ever and ever, even after we both die, we’ll still be best friends.” I responded sincerely.
She was happy with that response and squeezed my hand.
That’s the same way I feel about the relationship with my wife, and the reason for that Is a conscious daily effort to make it so. In addition to being conscious of my seven criteria in our relationship, I remind myself of how lucky I am to have such a wonderful loving wife and all the reasons I fell in love with her over eight years ago.
From speaking with happily married people the secret to a happy marriage is to work at it every day. Admittedly, some days I work harder than others, but our relationship is something that I think about every day.
When I hear of married couples who divorce after twenty years of marriage saying they “grew apart” or “just don’t love each other anymore” I hear “I didn’t make enough of an effort over the last twenty years and now I can’t be bothered.”
Harsh, perhaps, but I see a lack of effort is generally the cause of failure.
Everlasting Love – U2
Hearts gone astray
Keeping up when they go
I went away
Just when you needed me so
You won’t regret
I’ll come back begging you
Don’t you forget
Welcome love we once knew
Yeah
Open up your eyes
Then you’ll realize
Here I said was my
Everlasting love
Need you by my side
Come and be my pride
You’ll never be denied
Everlasting love
From the very start
Open up your heart
Feel the love you’ve got
Everlasting love
This love will last forever
This love will last forever
Hearts gone astray
Keeping up when they go
I went away
Just when you needed me so
You won’t regret
I’ll come back begging you
Don’t you forget
Welcome love we once knew
Yeah…
When life really flows
No one really knows
The sun will have to show them
Everlasting love
Like the sun it shines
Endlessly it shines
You always will be mine
Eternal love
Whatever love went wrong
Ours would still be strong
We’d have our own
Everlasting love
This love will last forever
This love will last forever
Open up your eyes
Then you’ll realize
Here I said was my
Everlasting love
Need you by my side
Come and be my pride
Never be denied
Everlasting love
From the very start
Open up your heart
Feel the love you’ve got
Everlasting love
[Repeat until end]
